Professor 'Biodun Adedipe is an economist, financial consultant and educator whose work sits at the intersection of corporate finance, strategy, banking and public policy. Over more than 42 years of post-graduate work experience, he has combined university teaching and research with professional practice across investment banking, financial consulting and public sector advisory, bringing together research, policy and practice to address complex economic and financial challenges facing Nigeria and the wider region.
Prof. Adedipe is the Founder and Chief Consultant of B. Adedipe Associates Limited (BAA Consult), a firm of management and financial consultants he founded in February 1993, which commenced operations in March 1994. In this role, he has been involved in strengthening the strategy, strategic management and credit process in several Nigerian banks, non-financial businesses and not-for-profit organisations, and has since 2012 been actively engaged in developing the lending and organisational capacity of microfinance banks in Nigeria, with a focus on microcredit and SME lending. He is a highly sought-after analyst and commentator on government budgets and economic policy, a role he has held for close to 30 years. His career has also spanned university teaching and research at the University of Lagos (Akoka), private consulting with Enterprise Consulting Group Limited (Ikeja, Lagos), a World Bank Mission assignment in Nigeria and the Africa Region, and investment/merchant banking with IMB Bank PLC and First City Monument Bank Limited.
Prof. Adedipe holds a First Class B.Sc. in Economics and a Ph.D. in Economics, specialising in Corporate Finance. He consults and facilitates for the Central Bank of Nigeria on major policy issues and new directions, having served as Team Leader for the Credit Market component of the Financial Sector Strategy 2020 (FSS 2020), which evolved into the Nigerian Vision 20:2020. In January 2013, under the ENABLE programme (funded by DFID), he facilitated for the Shared Services Office of the Central Bank of Nigeria, driving a workshop to review the outcome of the Cash-less Policy Pilot in Lagos ahead of its rollout to five additional States. He served on the Presidential Committee of Experts on the Redenomination of the Naira (November 2008), a Federal Government Committee of Experts on Expenditure Review addressing bloated Recurrent Expenditure (October 2010 – March 2011), and as Senior Special Assistant to the President (Financial Sector Development), deployed to the Office of the Chief Economic Adviser to the President (March–May 2011).
Alongside his consulting practice, Prof. Adedipe trains company directors in corporate governance, strategy and business development under the auspices of the Institute of Directors, Nigeria, where he also serves on the Research & Advocacy Committee, the Charter Transition Committee and the Director Development Committee. He is an accomplished trainer in the Nigerian banking and finance industry and in non-financial organisations, and has designed and delivered AML/CFT training for regulatory bodies, including SEC Nigeria and SEC Ghana, and for deposit-taking financial institutions. He has served the Nigerian Economic Summit Group in various capacities since 1999 — including as Rapporteur and Consultant to the Trade and Investment Policy Commission (1999–2015), Facilitator for SME, Financial Inclusion and Financial Markets (from August 2015), a member and later Vice-Chairman of its Technical Sub-Committee (2009–2012), 1st Vice-Chairman of its Central Organizing Committee (2013), Chairman of its Editorial Sub-Committee (2010–2014), and Chairman of the Central Organizing Committee (2015–2016). He holds long-standing roles at the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), including member of the Strategic Planning Committee (1994–2010), member of the Technical Committee that presented the draft Bill on the Institute to the National Assembly (2006), Chairman of the Strategic Planning Monitoring Sub-Committee (2006–2008), member of the Research & Strategic Planning Committee (2010–2014), member of the Programme Sub-Committee for the 2017 World Conference of Banking Institutes (2015–2017), and Chairman of the Research Committee (from August 2020). He is also a registered tutor for the Business Strategy Game (BSG).
Prof. Adedipe is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, a Fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants, a Fellow and Risk Management Ambassador of the Association of Risk Management Professionals, a Life Member of the Nigeria Economic Society, and a member of the American Economic Association, the Institute of Directors Nigeria, and the Nigeria Institute of Management (Chartered). His academic distinctions include the Henry Fajemirokun Award for Best Graduating Student in Business Economics (1980), a Federal Government of Nigeria Scholarship for Doctoral Study (1982–1986), a Graduate Assistantship at the University of Lagos (1982–1987), and recognition as Sir Adam Thomson Scholar, a Visiting Doctoral Research Student at the University of Sussex, UK (1984). His later honours include the Kwame Nkrumah Outstanding Merit Award (2007), the PEARL Award for Capital Market Development (2012), and the Patmos Bible School of Faith Meritorious Alumni/Patron's Award (2017).
He currently serves on the boards of several institutions, including as a member of UTL Management and Trust Services (since 2019); Chairman of UTL Asset Management Limited (since January 2022); member of PEARL Awards Nigeria (since 1995); Chairman/Independent member of the Investment Committee of First Ally Asset Management Fund (since 2019) and of Emerging Africa Asset Management Funds (since 2021); Chairman of Values to Excel Foundation (since 2019); Chairman of Boaz Management & Financial Services Limited (since 2008); member of the Microfinance Learning & Development Centre; Independent Director and Chairman of the Audit Committee of Microfinance Development Company Limited (since 2019); and member of the Nigerian Microfinance Platform.
His work is motivated by a commitment to strengthening financial institutions, sound economic policy and sustainable enterprise development across Nigeria and the African region.
