Dr Pradeep Hewage

Dr Pradeep Hewage is a Senior Lecturer in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in the School of Creative Technologies at the University of Greater Manchester, United Kingdom. He is an experienced lecturer, researcher and technology practitioner with approximately 15 years of experience teaching culturally diverse cohorts in higher education. His academic and applied interests span artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, robotics, augmented and virtual reality, Internet of Things, computer vision, data science and software development.

He holds a PhD in Computing from Edge Hill University, specialising in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science and Robotics. His doctoral research developed and empirically evaluated an artificial intelligence-based customised weather forecasting and monitoring model for the agriculture sector. He also holds an MSc in Computing with Distinction from Edge Hill University, a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education, and a range of professional and
technical qualifications in computing, database technologies, cloud fundamentals, data science, software testing and MATLAB.

At the University of Greater Manchester, Dr Hewage teaches across undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes. His teaching includes Data Science, Big Data, Data Mining and Machine Learning, Advanced Research Analysis and Methods, Emerging Technologies, Computer Science Fundamentals and Mathematics for Computing. He supervises undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral research and has supported two PhD completions in the United Kingdom.

Before joining the University of Greater Manchester, he served as an Associate Lecturer in Computing and as a Doctoral Tutor at Edge Hill University. He also worked as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Computer Vision on the Context-aware Human Activity Recognition and Monitoring project for intelligent vehicles, contributing to research on monitoring and anticipating human driver activity. Earlier in his career, he worked in software development, testing and user acceptance testing, bringing industry-facing technical experience into his teaching and research. Dr Hewage has developed a strong applied research and knowledge-exchange portfolio. He has built and sustained collaborations with more than 14 industrial partners across healthcare, logistics, fintech and the creative industries, supporting AI solutions, consultancy, student engagement and knowledge transfer. His technical expertise includes Python, Java, MATLAB, R, machine learning tools, robotics, IoT development, database systems, software testing and Agile project environments.

His research has been presented at international conferences and seminars, including AAAI and IEEE events, and his peer-reviewed publication record includes outputs used in institutional research assessment activity. He has also represented the University in teaching and academic engagement for affiliated programmes in China, Switzerland and Sri Lanka. His scholarly profile records more than 1,700 citations and an h-index of 9.

Dr Hewage is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a Member of the British Computer Society. Beyond his academic responsibilities, he has contributed to community leadership through the South Liverpool Cricket Club and the Sri Lankan Community Centre in Liverpool. His work combines teaching excellence, applied artificial intelligence research, industry collaboration and the development of practical technology solutions to real-world problems.
