Charles Ujomu is a highly accomplished economist, investment banker, financial strategist and scholar who serves as the Chief Economist and Group Head of Research & Sustainability at Zenith Bank Plc.
He is a member of the Governing Council of James Hope University, Lagos.
He is also a member of the UK Royal Economic Society, and a member of the Economics and Statistics Committee of the Lagos Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
Charles has over 20 years’ experience in venture capital, private equity, economic policy and advisory, business consulting and development finance both in Europe and Africa. He is a First Class Graduate of Economics and holds a PhD.
He focuses on analyzing macro economy and international affairs in a bid to help drive investment decisions, capital allocation and mitigate risks. His work considers the interplay of international business and the global economy, while highlighting the key opportunities for investment; capitalizing on his capacity to translate trends in markets, policy, regulatory affairs and economics into their possible impact on national economies and business.
In his current role as Zenith Bank’s Chief Economist, he sets the overarching research agenda and thematic focus for the bank, determining which sectors, regions, and asset classes the financial institution would cover. He also manages a team of analysts, associates as well as strategists and ensures all the research publications, financial models, and valuation frameworks adhere to strict regulatory standards, governance thresholds, and the bank’s quality target.
In addition, Charles is the Group Head of Sustainability at Zenith Bank, where he is responsible for the development and delivery of a comprehensive sustainability strategy for the bank’s overall operations. He led the team that delivered the bank’s first sustainability report in compliance and alignment with the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards (IFRS S1 and IFRS S2).
Prior to this, he worked as a Research & Investment Analyst at CDA Investment Solutions, England, Senior Equity Analyst at Zenith Securities, Lagos, Deputy Head of Investor Relations at Zenith Bank, Senior Research & Investment Associate at Zenith Capital, Lagos, Assistant Vice-President at Wits Financial, England, and Special Economic Adviser to the Founder of Zenith Bank Plc.
He frequently provides expert insight on how global geopolitical tensions and energy crises impact African markets and other regions of the globe. He champions Nigeria as a highly attractive market for foreign and domestic investors, citing strong yield potential despite inflationary pressures. He regularly features on high-profile economic panels and summits exploring the critical intersection between finance, poverty, inequality, youth leadership, and economic development in Africa.
Charles studied History of Economic Thought at Oxford, Development Management at Manchester, Financial Management at East London, Economics at UNAD, and Finance at Babcock.
He is a Chartered Stockbroker, an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers of Nigeria (ACS), and an Associate of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment, UK (ACSI).
