David Mautin Oke presently heads the Economic Development and Policy Analysis unit of the James Hope Business School, James Hope University. He chairs the examination committee of the Business School, among other committees. He teaches and facilitates in Quantitative Economics and Econometrics, Economic Data Analytics, Business Analytics and Research Methodology, Quantitative Reasoning in Management, Managerial Economics and Advanced Microeconomics on the MBA, executive MBA, Finance and economics programmes, accordingly, in the University. He is also saddled with the responsibility of inaugurating and coordinating the Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Development in the University. Previously, he was appointed as a full professor of economics at Caleb University. He rose to the position of associate professor of economics at the prestigious University of Lagos in 2021. He had been elected twice to the University of Lagos’ Senate as a congregational representative. He was also appointed to represent the Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Management Science on the committee that worked on the development of a new establishment for promotions and appointments at the University of Lagos in 2023/2024. Besides, he was appointed as the Distance Learning Institute’s Deputy Director of Academic Planning and Development at the University of Lagos between 2020 and 2022. This Institute has in its enrolment over 18000 learners.
David bagged his PhD in economics from the highly esteemed University of Ibadan in 2012. He was a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in economics at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa between 2016 and 2017. After his post-doctoral research fellowship in 2017, he held an exceptional skills permit for four years to contribute towards research and higher education learning in the Republic. He has jointly supervised successfully three PhD candidates in economics at the University of Lagos and has assessed/examined all-together twelve PhD theses in University of Lagos, University of KwaZulu-Natal and Covenant University.
He was also a winner of a doctoral research writing grant of the African Economic Research Consortium, Kenya during his PhD’s study and research at University of Ibadan. David was also a doctoral scholar of the Lagos State Government during the period. He had also lectured at the Department of Economics of the Lagos State University. He is an Associate Chartered Stockbroker of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers (CIS) as well as a Certified Business Advisor (CBA) of the Institute of Business Advisors Southern Africa. In addition, he is a professional member of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the Econometric Society, Nigerian Economic Society, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Nigerian Association for Energy Economics/ International Association for Energy Economics and senior research fellow as well as a member of Management at the Centre for Economic Policy Analysis and Research of the University of Lagos. He was also a member of the Macroeconomics Working Group of the University of KwaZulu-Natal as well as the managing editor of the Journal of Economics and Policy Analysis of the Department of Economics, University of Lagos. He was also a member of the editorial board of the Nigerian Journal of Business and Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Lagos. He had attended and presented papers at both local and international Conferences including those held in countries like South Africa, USA, Canada and Ghana.
He is a sustainable developmental economist, macroeconomist and applied econometrician. He is an expert in productivity and efficiency analysis. As a development economist, his researches have displayed the applications, value and importance of data science, management and analytics in identifying opportunities and risks to sustainable socioeconomic development and relevant policy-making. As such, he has utilized quantitative oriented techniques involving the use of applied econometrics and mathematical modelling in analysing developmental, microeconomic and macroeconomic problems thereby contributing immensely to the field of sustainable development economics. His researches have focused on the importance of effective and sustainable policy-making in addressing issues related with socio-economic inequities, food security, resource management, governance and environmental balance. He has been awarded research grants individually/jointly totalling over tens of millions naira and has served as an expert consultant on some Nigeria-focused World Bank projects.
Specifically, he has conducted research and compiled findings in over 50 peer-reviewed articles, while also serving as a peer reviewer and journal editor. Particularly, he has been regularly invited to conduct peer review for authoritative journals in the field of economics, including the Journal of Developing Areas, African Development Review, Scientific African, the African Journal of Economic and Management Studies, the African Journal of Business and Economic Research, Journal of Economics and Policy Analysis, and the Nigerian Journal of Economic and Social Studies, among others. He had worked as a conference paper discussant for the Nigerian Economic Society. His articles are well cited, indicating his contributions to knowledge in economics. One of his recent job market papers on the trade facilitation, institutions, and sustainable economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa is of extraordinary note in the field of economics.
He focused on the influence of trade costs, imports, exports, and documentation, as well as the large government and institutional influences, such as financial policy, political stability, regulatory quality, corruption, accountability, and government effectiveness. He employed a two-step dynamic empirical system, utilizing a generalized method of moments estimator to determine the results and found that trade procedures provided a major boost in sustainable economic growth. Another job market paper of his on the role of renewable energy in sustainable development in Africa demonstrates his knack for challenging and impactful topics of investigations. This study has received global attentions and authors have cited him severally for his contributions to knowledge and policy development on the energy-environment nexus. In this job market paper, he found that the development and utilization of renewable energy practices enhances economic prosperity while promoting environmental sustainability.
He is happily married with children. He enjoys the gospel activities, reading, researching and listening to music.
