The programme allows you to apply an advanced-level knowledge of economics to practical and policy issues. You will be introduced to a range of techniques for development policy analysis, and review many of the most important areas of economic policy in developing countries—SSA.
In the first semester, you will take courses in economic policy analysis, macroeconomics, microeconomics, and economic data analysis. The macroeconomics and microeconomics modules are designed with a focus on policy. Next, in the second semester, you will take further required courses—in trade policy analysis and development policy analysis—and choose two optional modules. You will also start work on your dissertation by taking a module in research methodology and applied econometrics.

Students apply eight credit hours of specialized coursework to the M.Sc. in Economic Development and
Policy Analysis degree from the following, in consultation with their academic advisor.
– Globalization and International Economics (2 credits hours)
– Institutional Economics (2 credits hours)
– Social Policy and Development (2 credits hours)
– Environmental Economics and Sustainable Development (2 credits hours)
– Economics of Health and Health Care (2 credits hours)
– Spreadsheet Modelling and Analytics (2 credits hours)
Entry Requirement
Applicants to the James Hope Business School postgraduate programmes are required to possess an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with a strong academic record. JHBS admits graduates from all recognized universities to its postgraduate programmes provided that they satisfy the requirements stipulated below.
M.Sc. Admissions Requirements
Provided the University’s matriculation requirements are satisfied:
- Applicants with degree in relevant area from a recognized university with minimum of second class lower division may be admitted to the Master of Science degree programme.
- Applicants with postgraduate diploma at upper credit level in relevant areas from a recognized university may be admitted.
M.Sc. Required Admissions Documents
- Completed online application.
- Application fee.
- Official transcripts from all past academic institutions. Unofficial transcripts may be submitted with your application; once admitted, official transcripts, sent directly to JHBS from the issuing institution, are required prior to registration
- A professional resume that provides evidence of work experience.
- No prior work experience is required for the M.Sc. programme.
- A personal statement that discusses your career goals, your interest in the programme and your perspective into how the JHBS degree will help you achieve your goals.
- Three professional/academic referees
Students whose native language is not English may be required to participate in an admissions interview and/or submit official TOEFL/IELTS scores or equivalent evidence of English proficiency.
